Why Is My Fridge Water Line Leaking or Not Working?

by the Berry team · Updated

If your fridge has an ice maker or water dispenser, leaks usually come from a cracked plastic supply line, a loose connection behind the fridge, or an old saddle valve, and replacing the line with a braided stainless one costs about $15-$40. If water does not reach the fridge at all, the cause is usually a clogged filter, a frozen line, a closed valve, or a failed inlet valve.

Leaking or not flowing?

Start by figuring out which problem you have. Water on the floor is a leak. A slow or dead dispenser, or an ice maker with no ice, is a flow problem.

If it is leaking

  1. Shut off the water to the fridge. The valve is often under the kitchen sink, in the basement or crawl space below the fridge, or behind the fridge.
  2. Unplug the fridge and pull it out carefully so you do not kink or tear the line.
  3. Find the wet spot. Check the connection on the back of the fridge, the line itself, and the valve at the wall or pipe.
  4. Tighten or replace. If a fitting is loose, snug it gently. If the line is plastic, cracked, or old, replace it with a braided stainless steel fridge line.
  5. Check after a day. Leave the fridge pulled out and look again after it has been running for a while.

If water is not flowing

  • Check the valve. Make sure the water supply valve to the fridge is fully open.

  • Change the filter. A clogged filter is the most common cause of slow dispensers. Many manufacturers suggest replacing it about every six months.

  • Look for a kink. Pushing a fridge back against the wall can pinch the line behind it.

  • Check for a frozen line. If the freezer is set very cold or the fridge is in a cold space, the line in the door can freeze. Raise the freezer temperature slightly for a day.

  • Check the ice maker switch. Many ice makers have an on and off switch or a wire arm that stops ice production when raised.

About saddle valves

Older fridge installs often use a saddle valve, a clamp that pierces a copper pipe to tap water for the fridge line. They are cheap and easy to install, but they tend to leak over time, and some local codes no longer allow them. If yours drips, or if you are replacing the line anyway, having a plumber install a proper quarter-turn shutoff valve is a worthwhile upgrade. See why low water pressure happens if the whole kitchen has weak flow.

When to call a pro

  • Water has been leaking long enough to soften the floor, stain the ceiling below, or cause mold.
  • The leak is at a saddle valve or the shutoff valve, and you are not comfortable with plumbing.
  • The ice maker overflows or the fridge keeps filling with water, which points to a failed inlet valve.
  • Water reaches the fridge, the filter is new, and the dispenser or ice maker still does not work.

What makes it worse if you wait

  • A slow drip behind a fridge can rot the subfloor and damage the ceiling below without anyone noticing.
  • Plastic supply lines get more brittle with age and can split, releasing water quickly.
  • An old filter lets more sediment through and slows the flow until the dispenser stops.

Common questions

How do I fix a leaking refrigerator water line?

Shut off the water, unplug the fridge, and pull it out. Find the leak at the fridge connection, the line, or the valve. Tighten loose fittings and replace plastic or cracked lines with a braided stainless line, which usually costs $15-$40.

How often should a refrigerator water filter be changed?

Many manufacturers recommend about every six months, or sooner if the dispenser slows down. Check your fridge manual or the filter indicator light.

Why is my fridge water dispenser not working?

Common causes are a clogged filter, a closed or partly closed supply valve, a kinked line behind the fridge, a frozen line in the door, or a failed water inlet valve.

Are saddle valves bad?

They are prone to leaking as they age, and some local codes no longer allow them. If yours leaks or you are replacing the fridge line anyway, a proper quarter-turn shutoff valve is a better long-term choice.
